BIENVENIDOS AND WELCOME TO SAYULITA! Sayulita is a charming fishing village just 22 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. The Pacific coast in this part of Mexico is mountainous and rimmed with tall coconut palm trees and lush jungle vegetation. The drive from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita takes 35 to 45 minutes - as you leave the city's bustle behind, the highway shrinks into two narrow lanes that wind through tropical jungle under a green canopy of huge, arching tree branches. With its charming, traditional Plaza, colorful stucco homes, shops hugging the cobblestone streets, and open-air, thatched-roofed restaurants, Sayulita seems a welcome world away from the ticketed tourists sites and smoothly manicured golf courses of Mexico's glitzy, expensive, Americanized resorts. The locals are friendly, the pace is slow, and it's still possible to buy fresh fish from local 'pescadores' as they beach their boats right on the town beach. Walking from one end of town to the other takes no more than twenty minutes. Sayulita's large enough to offer plenty of good restaurants, some lovely and unique shops, and several very nice art galleries -- yet small enough for everyone, even the friendly canines, to look familiar after a week or two. The days pass too quickly on Sayulita's beautiful sun-bleached beaches. The ocean is a deep, mesmerizing blue and an inviting temperature for swimming year round. There are two excellent surf breaks right in town, as well as a sheltered safe beach that's ideal for families with small children. When you're ready for a change from the beach you can rent mountain bikes or motorcycles, arrange for off-shore fishing, sailing, or snorkeling expeditions, ride horses on the beach, sign up for a 'Canopy Tour' or ropes course in the nearby jungle, dig out your binoculars and watch the whales that return to Sayulita's waters year after year (wintertime), take inexpensive ($2.50 an hour) Spanish language classes or participate in Spanish language conversational groups at the local bookstore, savor Italian ice cream or fresh, tropical fruit 'paletas' while people-watching on a shady bench in the town Plaza, etc You'll never be bored in Sayulita! Nighttimes are as enjoyable as the days. Sayulita's restaurants offer fresh fish and seafood, Italian food, Argentinean food, French, traditional Mexican, Mayan, Thai, Chinese, vegetarian. You'll be amazed by the variety and quality of the many small restaurants in this laid-back village! There are several live music venues around town, Salsa dancing on Monday nights, weekly open-air movies on a large portable screen in a bougainvillea-bordered courtyard, and frequent hometown entertainment, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, on the Plaza - perhaps a Huichol (the Indians native to the area) drummer, or a mariachi band, or some of the local 'caballeros' showing off their spirited horses (trained to prance and 'dance' in much the style of the legendary Spanish Riding School stallions). On your walk back to Casa Mural you'll notice the Milky Way, far from the competition of city lights, gleaming like a handful of glitter scattered across a black velvet curtain, while the Big and Little Dippers, well-known friends to tourists from all over the world, tilt in an unfamiliar corner of the southern sky. Chances are you'll become addicted to Sayulita's hospitality and easy-going ways, and want to return year after year. We hope you'll always want to make Casa Mural your Sayulita headquarters and home-away-from-home |
